Let me take you down…
[American Songwriter]

For me, the first arrival of local strawberries in the market — more than any other ingredient — signifies the official beginning of summer.

Here in California, strawberry season is already well underway.

I thought this would be an apropos time to explore summer’s favorite fruit from the cannabis connoisseur’s perspective, including some tasty medicated strawberry recipes, favorite strawberry marijuana strains, and even strawberry themed music to enjoy it all by.

When the United States intensified its War on Drugs in the mid-1980s, the media, government policy, police forces and Nancy Reagan’s “Just Say No” campaign all painted the perils of drug use. Crack/cocaine, marijuana, heroin, and other illegal drugs were all blamed for increased murder rates, addiction, overdoses and a myriad of other problems plaguing the country’s urban areas.

Growing up African American in one of Miami’s toughest neighborhoods, Carl Hart, Ph.D. never questioned that crack may be the cause of his family’s and neighborhood’s problems with violence and abuse. But as he got older, he decided to further explore the truth behind illegal drugs—what long-term effects did they have? Were they as addictive as he had heard?

His new book High Price: A Neuroscientist’s Journey of Self-Discovery That Challenges Everything You Know About Drugs and Society (Harper/HarperCollins Publishers; $26.99/ $34.99 Can.; Hardcover; ISBN 13: 9780062015884), is based on 22 years of research as a groundbreaking neuropsychopharmacologist about the study and science of drug addiction, but it is also a provocative and eye-opening memoir where he recalls his journey of self-discovery, how he avoided a life of crime and drugs and avoided becoming one of the crack addicts he now studies.

Seattle Hempfest lighter, 2012 edition
[alapoet]

Has the Bic company refused to print Seattle Hempfest-branded lighters with marijuana leaves on them?

It has, according to a status update posted on Seattle Hempfest’s Facebook page Friday afternoon.

“Bic Lighters, after years of printing our lighters, has now refused to print pot leaves on lighters for us,” the update reads. “Is that crazy?

“We’ve been producing Hempfest lighters for some time,” the update reads. “Bic has chickened out.

“How much money do you think Bic lighters [make] off of the cannabis culture?” the update reads. “Equality some day!”

Musical artist Chief Greenbud has gotten some favorable attention for his marijuana-themed songs, and his latest song and video on YouTube are going to please his old fans, and likely gain him some new ones.

“Marijuana Mellows You Out” is the name of the tune, and it adheres to the Chief’s thoroughly stoned, happy-go-lucky musical and lyrical style.

The underground world of “functional” glass art will emerge in an established gallery at the 7th Annual Night with Borosilicate on May 4 in Seattle. The event, hosted by Hot Glass Color & Supply and co-sponsored by Piece of Mind, will feature live torch demonstrations, Seattle’s only glass art pipe gallery show, a silent auction, raffle & technical workshops for glass artists.

The event will be held in the Belltown neighborhood, at the Seattle Glassblowing Studio space. Tickets for the evening’s events are $10 and will be available at the door.

Although relatively unknown in the mainstream art world, a vibrant scene has emerged around a new American folk art – elaborate, hand blown glass pipes that are functional enough to use for smoking. These amazing creations will come out of the shadows and into one of Seattle’s premier glass art galleries for a night of glassblowing, camaraderie and charity.

The documentary film Degenerate Art by Marble Slinger Productions helped popularize this art form when it was released on Netflix in 2012. The passage of I-502, the ballot initiative legalizing recreational marijuana use in Washington State, is bringing wider recognition to this rebellious art form indigenous to the Pacific Northwest.

I was gifted an Armilon Capsule recently, and offered to do a review.  I have to say, this is one of the sweetest smoking devices I’ve had the pleasure of using in my 25-year career.  There’s no mistaking that this piece is beautiful, but it might raise a few eyebrows with it’s sleek, sexy design!  When I first saw it, let’s just say I thought it was something else entirely.

Crafted out of anodized, aircraft grade aluminum, The Armilon’s finely turned pieces fit together well, gliding together on gaskets to make a capsule that is small enough to fit in your pocket.  It hits very smooth, but be careful — it hits back!  That awesome cooling action will knock you on the head.  The advantage to that?  It takes less medicine!

As a cannabis patient with a limited budget, who is in chronic pain, this is important to me. The first morning after I received this pipe, I took two hits of some Church OG that I’d been smoking on for about two weeks. It relieved my pain, and put me in an amazing mood.

HoneyTinc_SLetts (2)

For all the gabbing I do about ingesting, I figure it’s time to share a favorite recipe. My go-to for a good night’s sleep and a good way to deal with myriad complications from various sundry illnesses and prescription side effects has been a good, old-fashioned honey-in-my-tea-at night; cannabis infused (of course) tincture.

Though tinctures are now readily available in legally run dispensaries and collectives in medical marijuana states, if you have access to trim or bud, it’s never a bad idea to learn to make your own medicine. In fact, the one mantra I have on the politics of the plant is, to retain the right to grow and make our own.

Stovetop remedies have been created from plants and other naturally growing and found things on this planet, since an opposable thumb first plucked the first herb, with recipes handed down through generations. It’s the American way, and how this country was planted. Albeit, with Hemp as the leading cash crop back in the day.
