A Morning-To-Night List of Delivery Options to Help You Get The Most From Cannabis
By Sharon Letts
Cannabis use can be confusing. The failed War on Drugs has ingrained negativity for the plant into the psyches of the average American for decades now, with the only enlightenment coming from those who have the insight and courage to experiment medicinally. When the plant helps, the stigma is broken and those who can are compelled to share.
That’s my story. I was the stoner from the 70s who ingested for pain, then cancer, then found the plant turned my health and life around for the better. I’m compelled to share, and share I do – daily. https://tokesignals.com/my-journey-self-medicating-with-cannabis/
Patients write to me on a daily basis from all over the world asking for help. Within the cannabis community there is compassion like no other faction, with the green recreational rush quickly turning into a green wellness train to legal states and healing.
We now know that smoking alone won’t turn our illnesses around. Those who are still on prescription meds, smoking to alleviate myriad side effects from traditional treatments, need more delivery methods from the plant.
My own daily dosing has been refined to the point where I feel confident to share. Following is a morning-to-night list of delivery options to help you get the most from this plant.
Medicating with cannabis is probably the most proactive health care path you’ll go down. The medicine is real and it’s in there; you only need to access it and use it, because it won’t work unless you work it – as they say. God’s speed to good health!
Wake and Bake
I’ve often said, even the most arduous stoners insisting cannabis isn’t medicine are getting the benefits of the plant warding off stroke, heart, and lung disease unknowingly — just by smoking. If they are dealing with neurological disorders such as depression, anxiety, or anything under the ever widening autistic spectrum, they will be unwittingly helped by smoking. Those with chronic pain and stiffness have long known about medicating in the morning. For those that need a neurological lift there is nothing that compares to the ritual of cutting up bud and loading up the morning bowl. For the plant lifts endorphins like a morning jog, lifts you up out of bed and helps you to have a day.
For myself, smoking helps me be a productive human. Depression and agoraphobia are just two menopause issues I deal with on a daily basis, and smoking helps gets me off my duff and out into the world.
If bronchial issues from carbon keep you from enjoying smoking, a vaporizer will do the trick, giving relief for Asthma and COPD patients – replacing steroid inhalers.
I go back and forth between vaping and smoking – getting pure medicine into my lungs and blood stream for a clean dose when needed. This has become a maintenance process for me, as I do enjoy smoking.
Chronic pain from a partially disable knee with a chipped patella can shut me down regularly. Compensating for the knee has left both legs, feet and lower back challenged. I’ve learned to use a medicated salve daily and often for immediate pain relief with no psychoactive properties when applied topically. There are many good salves and lotions out there, but I’ve learned to make my own with coconut solid.
Medicated Coconut Salve
1 Tub Coconut Solid (78 oz. Costco $21.50)
1 ounce Trim (leaves, stems, small buds or crystal shake)
Put all in a crock pot and let simmer on low for four hours. I shut mine down and let sit overnight, then warm it up in the morning again, checking for color (which equates to strength).
Strain with cheese cloth and put into containers. Liquid with solidify.
Store salve at room temperature.
This salve can also be eaten and is psychoactive, as it’s heated and THC or Tetrahydrocannabinol is activated with heat.
Think “inflammation and infection” when using a topical salve, replacing over-the-counter topicals such as “Ben Gay,” or “Neosporin” for soft tissue pain, cuts, bug bites, minor skin cancers (there are around 35 types that are not serious) and more.
When ingesting, think pain, depression, sleep, digestive issues such as constipation, and IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
This salve can also be eaten and is psychoactive, as it’s heated and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is activated with heat. It can be mixed with stronger concentrates, such as RSO, or Rick Simpson Oil (detailed below), and put into a suppository for quick delivery into the blood stream. This method also works well for those who have trouble ingesting orally.
I first began juicing leaf when I saw a mass in my right breast during a routine mammogram, then ultra sound that mimicked Lobular Carcinoma, a type of breast cancer affecting just 10 to 15 percent of all women in this country.By the time the first biopsy was scheduled five weeks later part of the mass was gone. As detailed in my essay on the experience, I added oil and it disappeared completely, but in the process of juicing all my symptoms from thyroid disease which had plagued me for more than 13 years went away.
It’s been more than two years since I began drinking my medicine daily. Inspired by Dr. William Courtney of California after he healed his lovely wife of lupus, I began by blending leaf with water, then straining it.
Now I blend without straining using thicker juices like green drink or coconut water with aloe vera juice – two beneficial juices – adding fruit and yogurt for a smoothie, getting the whole plant with roughage which aids in my digestive issues associated with thyroid disease.
If you are fortunate enough to have leaf available to you, eating the plant raw causes no psychoactive reaction and delivers more real medicine into the blood stream than any other method.
1 heaping handful of leaf (bottom, fan, small or large with stems removed)
½ cup fruit (frozen or fresh)
1 cup aloe Vera coconut juice or pre-made green or protein drink
Blend to liquefy
Incredible Edible Medibles
If I’m out of RSO and a tincture just isn’t enough, I’ll reach for a medible. It’s a different kind of feeling – especially for depression, and is perfect for those who need to keep the medicine in their system for real illness, or for those who can’t or don’t’ enjoy smoking.Ingesting medibles can be tricky as the recipes and strengths can vary depending on the type of cannabis strains used. The rule of thumb is, eat a small amount initially, then wait an hour before eating more. As you continue to ingest your tolerance will build and the THC won’t affect you as strongly.
1 pound of butter
1 ounce of trim (leaf, stem, smalls or use whole bud for a stronger dose)
1 quart waterSimmer in a crock pot for four hours on low. I let the mixture sit overnight, then turn it on again in the morning, checking strength.
Put the entire mixture into the refrigerator. The plant material will separate from the budder in the water, with the budder forming a solid on top. The green of the plant, or the bitter taste, will be absorbed in the water and the budder will have a light green color.
Use this budder as you would butter in any cooking recipe, using the step-up dosing method of taking a small amount initially, waiting an hour, then dosing again. If you ingest too much lay down and take a nap. Sleeping is part of healing.
The Common Cold
No, cannabis won’t cure the common cold, but it will strengthen your immune system, warding off infection and illness.
This past winter I kept colds and serious flu at bay by upping my ingesting when I felt a fever, aches and pains, and stomach upset coming on. I never fully got the flu, as pain and fever are a cannabis specialty.
As said, for bronchial issues the vaporizer clears up the lungs like nothing else. Nasal passages are cleared and coughs are quelled.
During my breast cancer scare I began taking RSO or Rick Simpson Oil at night for sleep. Called “honey oil” in the 1970s, around 10 years ago Canadian Rick Simpson whipped up a batch for his own terminal skin cancer after being told to put his house in order. The oil cleared up Simpson’s cancer and he’s been sharing the recipe ever since with astounding results, putting the most invasive cancers into remission and righting some of the most difficult disorders and diseases such as diabetes, lupus, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, stroke recovery, rheumatoid arthritis, and more.
Taken at night, I was no longer waking up every hour from menopause, with the strong medicine of the plant quelling any pain I typically woke up with from my knee injury. And, as a bonus, all my organs were cleansed – passing chunks of dark orange gel that had adhered to my kidney and liver, and, no doubt, killing any cancers left lurking in my stem cells.
My hormonal issues from menopause and thyroid disease were quelled, as well, with my emotions in check and a general sense of well-being ensued.
Cancer Dose…The treatment for putting cancer into remission is 60 grams in 90 days, with a step-up dosing regimen allowing the patient to get used to the strong concentrate slowly, as it is extremely strong.
Patients who take too much inadvertently often end up in the emergency room and are given Valium inducing sleep. Simpson encourages patients to stay home and sleep, as the stigma is bad enough as it is and ER visits only continue the misinformation.
This same 90 day treatment is encouraged for putting other illness into remission, as well. Maladies such as multiple sclerosis, lupus, diabetes, and more are said to be quelled with the oil, with a maintenance dose of a spot the size of a grain of rice to keep illness at bay.
The oil, which is typically dispensed in a measured syringe for ease, can be taken orally, or can be put into suppositories, getting to the blood stream quicker. When dosing with suppositories add coconut solid to the mix, as coconut aids in delivery, as well.
After reviewing Baked Italian by Yzabetta Sativa on Green Candy Press for Dope Magazine, I was inspired to make her infused alcohol tonic, “Ganja Gin.” This was such a success I soon made “Ganja Rum,” and my one to two cocktail-limit of Gimlets and Mojitos in the evening was instantly turned into another dose, and another way to deliver good medicine into my system.I can’t tell you how brilliant this is, as alcohol is an inflammatory and causes infection – two conditions knocked out of the park with cannabis use. What this means is, I have no hangover the next day as headaches are basically inflammation, and any nausea that may ensue from drinking is quelled.
This means I can enjoy my organ damaging cocktails in peace, knowing the cannabis in the mix is helping to counteract the ill effects.
And you can relax, as alcohol breaks down the plant without heat, so there is no psychoactive effect, just good medicine in the mix. But, please beware… adding cannabis ingesting with alcohol use can cause serious intoxication and tummy upset. Please use common sense.
1 large bottle of booze (1.5 liters)
1 ounce trim (leaf, stem, smalls, crystal leaf, etc.)
Add trim to alcohol and let sit in a cool, dark place for two weeks.
Strain with cheese cloth and enjoy!
Note: this recipe can also be used with apple cider vinegar – a beneficial tonic in its own right – or glycerin. As with the alcohol, vinegar and glycerin breaks down the plant without heat, so there are no psychoactive effects.
Stoned or Well?
Though growers are actively hybridizing the plant back to its original state with less THC, the debate for CBD or cannabidiol only strains grows.
Rick Simpson swears we need the THC, but just how much is the crux of the issue. We do know that the Holy Anointing Oil from the Bible that Jesus used was indeed cannabis [Editor’s note: This isn’t an established scientific fact, and is still being debated], measuring in at just two to four percent THC – so we know it’s needed, albeit in smaller doses for real medicine.Negative effects from too much THC are anxiety, heart palpitations, and extreme paranoia. I was once in a hot tub with a friend who has such a reaction and was convinced flesh eating bacteria was in the tub. Ten to 15 percent of cannabis users report such paranoia after smoking a high THC strain.
Charlotte’s Web, a high-CBD, no-THC strain created in Colorado by the Stanley brothers, is currently helping children with severe epileptic seizures. The strain is being sent to the cannabis legal country of Uruguay with the promise of oil made from the strain imported back to the States as hemp oil – getting around the cannabis conundrum of our own government denouncing it as real medicine.
Word has it the Stanley brothers are developing a strain with just five percent THC, delivering the clarity of THC without the loopiness of the compound.
While the American Cancer Society is still looking for a cure, and former Vice President Al Gore and posse are fighting for the environment, stoners are already saving the world and its people one plant at a time. This is probably the most serious joke of the century, but it’s very real. The knowledge is there, and the studies have been done – contrary to the rhetoric of the day.
My own physician had just a bleary idea of what this plant is about until I presented my newfound health to her. Now she can suggest to other patients with confidence – and is happy to do so. Don’t be shy about talking to your doctor about cannabis.
Those who know must evangelize this plant… for until the words come out of our mouths, the truth will not be heard.
