Senator Constance Johnson:
Taking on the good old boys in Oklahoma
[Joe Wertz/State Impact Oklahoma]

A bill which would legalize the medical use of marijuana in Oklahoma has been granted a hearing in a state Senate committee.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Constance Johnson (D-Oklahoma City), will be heard Monday by the Senate Health and Human Services Committee.

According to political observers, the bill will face still opposition. Oklahoma is, after all, a state where you can get life in prison for making hashish.

Sen. Johnson has introduced several bills in the past to ease penalties for cannabis possession, but they typically haven’t even been granted a hearing. Democrats and their bills don’t get a lot of respect in a state that is deeply steeped in a proudly ignorant good-old-boy culture.

Sen. Brian Crain, chairman, Health and Human Services Committee, claims he'd "normally" oppose a medical marijuana bill, but is granting a hearing on this one due to Sen. Johnson's "persistence"

I mean, come on: These ignorant fucks, I mean good old boys, in the Legislature tried to pass a “personhood” measure last year, which would force women to bear children against their will. Sen. Johnson — yes, the heroine of our story — proposed a counter-measure in the Oklahoma Senate:

“Any action in which a man ejaculates or otherwise deposits semen anywhere but in a woman’s vagina, shall be interpreted and construed as an action against an unborn child,” Sen. Johnson’s tongue-in-cheek measure read.

Most of the Republicans in the Legislature were too dumb to get it. But what they do get is “that crazy woman” is “not one of us,” and they danged sure ain’t gonna support any legislation she proposes, including this medical marijuana billl.

While Health and Human Services Committee Chairman Sen. Brian Crain (R-Tulsa) said he normally opposes medical marijuana, he claimed he agreed to hear the bill because of Johnson’s “persistence,” which sounds awfully condescending of His Eminence.

Johnson’s plan would allow authorized patients or their designated caregivers to possess up to eight ounces of dried marijuana, and to grow up to 12 plants.
