The crowd of around 20,000 scattered quickly, reports The Denver Post.
ABC 7NEWS reporter Russell Haythorn said he heard “four to five shots fired” at about 5:02 p.m., and the ambulances arrived while he was live on the 5 o’clock news.
One victim was hit in the leg and another person was also down with what were initially described unknown injuries, according to tweets from the Denver Police Department, reports Brooke Way at Fox 31.
Later reports were that one man and one woman were shot, each sustaining a leg injury. Both were between 20 and 30 years old, and neither injury was life-threatening, according to police.
Police were searching for two suspects in the shootings. Authorities described the first suspect as a light-complexioned black male, about six feet tall and weighing about 180 pounds. He was wearing a gray hoodie, black pants and a Carolina blue baseball cap.
The second suspect was a black male in a checkered black and white shirt. There was no description of that suspect’s height and weight, according to police spokesman Sonny Jackson.
“I didn’t see it, but I could hear ‘boom, boom, boom’ and I could see everybody just trampling and running,” one witness told Haythorn.
“I saw thousands running away from the south theater area,” tweeted Cody Crouch, the camera operator aboard AIRTRACKER 7.
Sources within the local cannabis movement said the shootings were apparently gang-related, according to Lafayette, Colorado activist Breezy Kiefair.
A well-placed source in contact with the Denver Police Department confirmed that the shootings appear to be gang-related. “It looks like old school Crips and Bloods,” our source told us.
There is a heavy police presence in the area following the reports.
